Kathryn Friedlander highlights the recent launch of a Journal of Expertise Special Issue centred on her 2024 book, The Psychology of Creative Performance and Expertise (Taylor & Francis).
The Journal of Expertise has just released a call for Expressions of Interest from researchers wishing to contribute a short commentary to this themed issue. The format follows the Behavioral and Brain Sciences model, in which a target article or précis is followed by a series of invited commentaries and a final author response. The target précis is available open access here.

As discussed before on this blog, the book explores how creativity and expertise develop and interact across a range of domains – including music, dance, theatre, creative writing, visual art, memory, mind games, and STEM. It examines both cognitive and cultural influences on performance, with dedicated chapters on motivational factors, mental imagery, aesthetic sensitivity, facilitators of excellence, obstacles such as burnout and stage fright, and the persistent gender disparities in recognition and access. A final chapter looks to the future, considering how AI and enhancement technologies may reshape our understanding of expert performance.
Commentaries are welcomed from across the fields of expertise research, creativity studies and performance psychology.
If you are interested, do visit the journal homepage and look for the call for Expressions of Interest.
EOI deadline: 25 June 2025
